L. Eugene Oburn “Gene”, age 84, of Pleasant Hill, Ohio passed away peacefully at Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton, on Thursday, December 11, 2025.
Gene was born on April 15, 1941, in Piqua, Ohio to the late Harold and Ada (Snapp) Oburn. In addition to his parents, Gene is preceded in death by his brother Dennis Oburn.
Gene is survived by the love of his life of 59 years, DeAnn (Benshoff) Oburn whom he married on July 2, 1966; his children, Nathan (Esther) Oburn of Pleasant Hill, OH, Vanessa (Ryan) Gordon of Charlotte, NC, Geneva (Tony) Price of New Madison, OH and Ben (Megan) Oburn of Fairborn, OH; 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren with 3 on the way and a sister, Alice (Henry) Dole of Modesto, CA; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Gene was a 1959 graduate of Newton High School. After high school he worked at Hobart Brothers in Troy, Ohio and then entered the United States Army where he served his country honorably. Gene served many years and in many capacities for the Newton Local Schools and was always in the crowd when his family played or performed. He worked in various jobs throughout his life until finding his greatest calling, serving as Pastor to four Brethren congregations in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania and a Grace Brethren congregation in Ohio. Gene was a member of the First Brethren Church in Pleasant Hill. He will be remembered for his vibrant personality and booming singing voice, leading hymns at many gatherings, most notably during worship services and at Family Camp at Camp Bethany.
A celebration of Gene’s life will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, December 17, at the First Brethren Church in Pleasant Hill, 210 Church Street. Friends are welcome to visit with the family from 11:00AM until the time of the service with a time of food and fellowship following.
Burial will take place in The Pleasant Hill Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
